Universal Design for Learning or Differentiated Instruction
Four Fundamental Themes of UDL
1. Students with disabilities fall along a continuum of learner differences, just as other students.
2. Teachers should make adjustments for all students not just those with disabilities.
3. Curriculum materials should be as varied and diverse as the learning styles and needs in the classroom, rather than textbook centered.
4. Rather than trying to adjust the students to learn from a set curriculum, the curriculum should be flexible to accommodate a range of student differences.

Nine Principles of Differentiated Instruction
1. Learning experiences are based on student readiness for the task, his or her individual interests, and learning profiles.
2. Assessments of students needs is ongoing, and all tasks are adapted to meet a student's need based on assessment information.
3. Active and respected participation is required of all students in activities.
4. The role of the teacher is coordinator of instruction and learning variables rather than provider of information.
5. Various and flexible work group configurations are used.
6. Student needs determine the flexibility in time use.
7. Various instructional strategies are used to meet student needs.
8. Specific criteria are determined to ensure student success.
9. Emphasis is on student strengths.
